Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. SIGNED ON THE COPYRIGHT PAGE as follows: "Best regards | Clyde Stephens | Hospital Point, Bacasdel Toro, | Panama." 8vo. 275p. Illustrated with 37 black and white captioned photos, including a large one of the author, and one black and white map affixed to the inside of the front cover. Stiff color pictorial wrappers with a vignette of Guatemalan woman with a basket of fruit on the front cover. " Many books and articles have been written about the United Fruit Company and its vast banana empire in the Tropics. Much of this literature was written by authors with a social or political ax to grind. As a result, the term 'Banana Republic' emerged to describe the image of certain countries in Central America -- rightly or wrongly so. But there is another side of the story that has never been told and that is what this book is about -- tales of the tropics by real banana people, los bananeros. There have been thousands of them both people and their stories, beginning in the 1870s when the first commercial banana business started." [from the rear wrapper] Additional cover title: History and Anecdotes of a Bygone Era." After graduating from the University of Florida, Clyde S Stevens joined the United Fruit Company as a banana research entomologist in early 1959. During three decades in the tropics, research assignments have taken him to Central and South America, the Caribbean, the Pacific and Asia. His work has been published in five scientific journals, the most important of which demonstrated that nearly all banana insect pests can be controlled by natural enemies, thus eliminating harmful pesticides. Stevens is a member of eleven conservation societies and ardently promotes the preservation of nature. The author lives with his wife Phyllis in La Lima, Honduras, where he is Director of banana Research and technical Services for Chiquita Brands, successor of the United Fruit Company." [from About the Author inside the rear cover] Just a comprehensive and authoritative description of the United Fruit Company and the cultivation of bananas by an expert in the field. This volume contains contributions by 27 other contributors. Signed by Author(s).
