Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A handsome Victorian collection of short biographies profiling figures such as Thomas Carlyle, Lord Tennyson, Charles Dickens, Charles Darwin, John Ruskin, Robert Browning, and George Moore, among others. Bound in the publisher's original blue cloth, elaborately decorated in gilt and black with a portrait roundel, Greek-key corner motifs, and a bee-and-poppy design to the front board; matching gilt-lettered spine with decorative vignette. Condition: Used, showing wear consistent with age. The cloth binding is sound but shows shelf wear, with rubbing and a couple of small stains to the boards. The spine head and tail are chipped and frayed, with some loss of cloth. The front hinge has been reinforced with tape (visible on the front free endpaper) and shows a repaired crease. There is period ownership inscription to the front endpaper ("Jean Duncan, Lower IV Mathematics and Latin, The English School, Heliopolis, June 15th 1938"), which adds a nice provenance note for collectors. Text block appears clean and complete; pages have the typical light toning of the period. This copy is stamped "SPECIMEN" in purple ink on the title page.
