Richard Codman was the younger brother of John Codman III (1755-1803), a successful shipping magnate, and a partner in the firm Codman and Smith until it was dissolved in 1790. The following year, John formed a partnership with Richard, under the name John & Richard Codman. Richard, (Harvard 1782), moved to Paris in 1793 and by all accounts lived an extravagant and lavish life, spending the firm's money on real estate, revelry, stocks and art. In 1800, John sailed for Paris to resolve his brother's financial entanglements, this however only prolonged the inevitable. *Richard Codman made very risky market decisions which led to his bankruptcy. The most protracted was a deal he made with William Vans (1763-1840), a Boston merchant over stock loans for just under £ 50,000 sterling. John tried to help his brother, but the debts were enormous. In a letter to creditors in 1801, John Codman wrote: "I have done all and more than all a brother ought to do, and I must now leave him to his fate." The Vans lawsuit was finally dropped in 1837; 31 years after Richard's death. The letters include, [Lisbon, June 21, 1795] by Edward Church (1740-1816), Harvard 1759, Boston merchant and brother of Dr. Benjamin Church (1734-1778), considered America's First Traitor, for supplying detailed military secrets to the British. Edward Church tells Codman that he's found an "American Brig to sail this day, being Sunday". He includes copies of letters [here written by him], he sent to Captain Samuel Smith and Jacob Dohrman (for balances due) and a note from Capt. Smith addressed to Church with a detailed financial report of the transaction. [In 1789, Edward Church published a satirical poem entitled "The Dangerous Vice", attacking John Adams] [Copenhagen, August 29, 1795] Thomas Clements, a Boston ship master and agent for Richard Codmen in Copenhagen, advising against the shipment of hemp to Saint Petersburg [Russia], "as the season is very far advanced and the Russia goods cost so high at this moment that very little can be made by it". [Amsterdam, November 10, 1796, and April 6 and 8, 1799] Two letters by Sylvanus Bourne (1761-1817), Harvard 1779, Boston merchant and U.S. consul at Amsterdam, telling Codman that there is little demand for American bills and 50 tons of coffee at the port of Rotterdam put up for sale by Mr. Cremer [?] and payments to Messrs. Contor [?] Isaac fils & co. [Hamburg, November 21, 1800] By John George Burmester a representative for Caspar Voght (1752-1839), owner of one of the largest trading firms in Hamburg. Concerning the payment of 600 pounds which Codman claimed was drawn on their account, Burmester finds no record of it. Burmester tells Codman that their balance is due and wants Codman to make the "considerable" payment to Paris firm of Perregaux & Co. He also tells Codman, "You will find enclosed the papers relative to Mr. Vans's draft on yourself for 3150 pounds, which contrary to my Expectation was returned to me with the necessary vouchers - I am really surprised after what I had written you that you should suffer this small bill". * Two letters are watermarked, D & C Blauw.
