Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 3rd Edition. 6 in. x 9 1/2 in. engraved portrait frontispiece with tissue guard. 583 pp., illustrated with 8 lithographic plates of sailing ships, and 2-page color map of South America at p. 326. The frontispiece and plates show some scattered tan spotting. Brown cloth with gilt titling on the spine, blindstamped covers. Nautical Instrument design bookplate of E. Lee Dorsett, M.D. F.A.C.S., U.S.N.R. on the front paste-down; ink inscription on the front free endpaper: "Presented to Francis George Shaw Esqr with the best respects of the Author. Brooklyn Decr the 14th 1859." Possibly to the Abolitionist, Francis George Shaw (1809-82). Spine ends show chipping, wear to cover corners, some ocassional tan spoting to flyleaves, prelims. Scarce 1858 One Volume Edition. Weight: 2 1/2 lbs.
