Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. The Theory and Practice of Gamesmanship: Or, The Art of Winning Games Without Actually Cheating by Stephen Potter. Illustrated by Lt.-Col. Frank Wilson. Henry Holt and Company, New York — no date / printing statement noted. Book: Very Good; Tight, solid hardcover copy in green cloth bo…ards with black lettering. Binding very tight, which is a strong condition point.Boards slightly soiled and some light edge and spinewear, corners maybe bumped a touch. Text block clean and unmarked except for owner's name on the first free endpaper. Pages uniformly lightly toned. No dust jacket. (see photos) Printing identification note: The Henry Holt edition is commonly cataloged as the first American edition, originally published in 1947. However, because your copy has no date or printing statement, safest listing language is: "Henry Holt hardcover; no date or printing statement noted." Public records identify Henry Holt copies from 1947 and note Frank Wilson as illustrator. Stephen Potter's classic comic treatise on "gamesmanship" explains the art of gaining psychological advantage in games and social competition without technically cheating. Illustrated by Lt.-Col. Frank Wilson, this witty mid-century satire helped popularize the term "gamesmanship" and remains appealing to readers of British humor, sports humor, social satire, and classic comic essays. Lt.-Col. Frank Wilson (illustrator).

Condition: New. 2004 N & M Press reprint (original 1885). SB. 313pp mapPublished Price £14.50 The 1885 siege of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, and the heoric death of Gen. Charles Gordon when its defences were overrun by the forces of the Mahdi is one of the great epics of Victorian imperial history. This account was written b…y one of the Intelligence Officers with the expedition which Gladstoneâs government belatedly sent down the Nile in an abortive bid to save Gordon. Wilson, although a personal friend of Gordon, is clear that the Mahdi was so determined to take Khartourm that the presence of the advance guard of the relieving force, - a paltry twenty men in two steamers - would have made no difference to Gordonâs fate even if it had arrived a week earlier. With ten appendices and an end paper map.
