Contact seller4-star sellerQuarto, green boards (hardcover), gilt letters and illustration to upper cover, 235 pp. Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: Anton Otto Fischer was born into extreme poverty in Regensburg in 1882, and found himself an orphan very shortly afterward. His early life makes extrememly interesting reading, although it wa…s far removed from all sight and sound of the sea. However, he did go to sea, if for quite the wrong reasons, and served in a variety of craft, both steam and sail, of different nationalities, finally coming ahsore in New York at the turn of the century. Later, he went to Paris to study at the Academie Julian (where he barely missed his contemporary, Arthur Briscoe) and, all this time, the reader is struck with his sense of purpose and innate self-discipline, which was characteristic of his entire life. On his return to the United States, he quickly made himself a great name as an illustrator and, possibly due to the insecurity of his youth, and partly because he was not a man who ever courted fame, he never ceased to illustrate -- the results making his name a household word wherever the greater American magazines and books were read. By this time, he was an American citizen. As time passed, he became purely a marine artist, and the pity was that so few of the countless thousands of people who awaited his illustrations so eagerly had any idea of the merits of the original pictures, or of the vast number of magnificent works produced for his own amusement. Although many of his pictures hang in galleries and museums, he himself never sought these venues but, when commissioned in the U.S. Coast Guard in the Second World War as an artist-laureate, the resulting pictures were widely exhibited and took the United States by storm. Nevertheless, few people have had the opportunity to appreciate Fischer's work to the full. He was probably the greatest marine artist ever to work on the Western side of the Atlantic. Extremely prolific, he produced an immense variety of subjects with uncanny accuracy, for he was a man who seemed to have a mystical affinity with the very run of the sea and the way of a ship, since these were things which he portrayed with a realism that was almost unique but, above all, he was the master of the delineation of men's emotions, whatever the situation. In this alone, he stands above all his peers. Art, Maritime. zslic.
