Contact seller5-star sellerSecond printing (as stated upon copyright page). [6], 190 pages. Hardcover: H 20.75cm x L 13.75cm. Lacks dust jacket. Blue cloth spine with bright gilt stamping; dark gray boards with some light toning; small patch of surface abrasion at front board's upper left; front board's gilt lettering and four-tone (gilt, white, gray, bla…ck) centerpiece mountain peak vignette a tad dulled but all still easily legible. Slight toning/foxing to fore-edge and bottom edge as well as to muted colored top edge. Presentation bookplate from Beckett Paper Company affixed to front pastedown. Contemporary envelope for "The Lippincott Co., Cincinnati, Ohio" laid-in at front endpapers. Interior pages are clean. Binding is firm. A very good+ copy. With b/w plates on unpaged leaves. Foreword by Carl Richard Greer who served as Director of Advertising and Company Relations at Beckett Paper Company. Text offers impressions of travel in England (Stratford-on-Avon, Oxford, London) and on to mainland Europe (Paris, Geneva, Mont Blanc, Matterhorn, Cologne, Brussels, Waterloo, Reims, etc.) evidently prepared as a company lagniappe or gift book to clients and associates. President of Beckett Paper Company Thomas Beckett provides an intertwined family history and company history on pages 155-190. Founded in 1848 in Hamilton, Ohio by family patriarch William Beckett, the paper manufacturer existed under several partnerships until being formerly incorporated in 1887 as Beckett Paper Company whereas it continued to be managed by family descendants until being acquired by Hammermill Paper Company in 1959 and, in turn, by International Paper in 1984 under which Beckett continues to operate as a subsidiary.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First U.S. Edition. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread in FINE condition. "The life of Rainer Maria Rilke---the poet whose Duino Elegies and Sonnets to Orpheus are among the most celebrated lyric works of our century, and whose novel, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, is a much belo…ved masterpiece---is here brilliantly told. We see his early life in Prague (raised as a girl until the age of seven), his strikingly inauspicious literary debut, the years of wandering through which he became, in effect, a citizen of the world---connected to Germany 'only by language,' his intellectual home in Paris; his trajectory through a glittering constellation of writers and artists: Tolstoy, Thomas Mann, Diaghilev, Paul Klee, Hermann Hesse, Paul Valery, Balthus; the two strong attachments that most deeply influenced him---his affair with the disarmingly impulsive Lou Andreas-Salome and his work with the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, and his extraordinary evolution as a poet---fitfully bringing forth the work that has secured him a lasting place in world letters." [publisher's copy] "The first comprehensive biography of Rilke in decades. Brilliantly written, it will appeal to readers of every age."---Die Zeit "A genial biography. The author is deeply familiar with the historical and cultural background. The fine detail of the biographical reconstruction, the energetic way in which past scenes are evoked, hosts of ladies patiently exhumed, subtle psychological continuities pursued, is remarkable and outstanding."---London Review of Books. Pristine copy w/sharp corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding w/no creases in spine & no age toning on pages. Attractive & presentable & quite collectible.
