Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Second Printing. Page 243 Pages with Glossary. Comadres celebrates a way of life, a regional language, and a generation of women whose contribution to New Mexican history and culture has long been overlooked. Branding cows, birthing children, sewing sheets, hauling water, and building walls, the hands of these women shaped the world in which they lived; their stories contribute to the ongoing legacy of Hispanic culture. García transcribes the women's remembrances in a printed regional Spanish remarkable for its faithfulness to the spoken word. This Spanish is richly dialectic and a vital thread in the varied tapestry that is New Mexican language. English translations render the Spanish with detailed, personal nuance, and a glossary encourages readers with linguistic interests to compare regional variations with the standard Spanish of textbooks and dictionaries. Ezzell, Emmy - Design (illustrator). By Author - Signature Only.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. This two volume set presents the writings of Edmund Pendleton of Caroline County, Virginia. While the two volumes are complete in regard to containing Pendleton's writings, these are Volumes 7 and 8 of the open numbered series "Virginia Historical Society Documents", issued under the imprint "Published for the Virginia Historical Society by the University Press of Virginia". Edmund Pendleton was a lawyer, burgess, Revolutionary moderate, and judge. He sat in the House of Burgesses, served in the First and Second Continental Congresses, chaired Virginia?s Committee of Safety in 1775, presided over the 1776 convention that moved Virginia toward independence, helped Jefferson and Wythe revise the state code, and later led the 1788 ratifying convention and the Court of Appeals. He favored reconciliation longer than Henry, then the Constitution. Editor Mays had already written the standard life, "Edmund Pendleton, 1721?1803: A Biography" (Harvard, 1952). These set is NOT his biography. THESE two volumes are the documentary companion, whose aim is to present Pendleton's writings, (other than his published judicial opinions), "as completely and accurately as possible" as Mays writes in the preface. It is a sourcebook, NOT a narrative. It can be read for Pendleton?s own voice on Virginia?s break with Britain, state-making, and early federal politics, and for the business of a planter-lawyer.ABOUT THIS SET: Both volumes are bound in matching two toned purple and gray linen with gilt lettering on the cover and spine. Both volumes contain a frontispiece in black and white. Continuously paginated from Volume I through Volume II. Each copy measures 10 inches tall x 7 inches wide x 1.25 inches thick. On a shelf, the volumes span 2.5 inches. -Volume I: Contains preface, editorial note, abbreviations, and chronology along with Pendleton's writings from March 14, 1734 through November 19, 1781. xxvii, 377 pp. - Volume II: Contains abbreviations and chronology, along with Pendleton's writings from December 3, 1781 through August 10, 1803. Also contains bibliography. Indexed. xiii, unnumbered introductory pages, 381-753 pp.CONDITION: A beautiful, near fine, two volume set with only very minor shelfware. Very nice indeed. Full refund if not satisfied.
