This book contains the memoirs of Come Alessandro Collini, an Italian man who traveled to Germany and then to Berlin in the mid-1700s, where he worked for Voltaire for five years. Born in the capital of Tuscany and educated in law at the University of Pisa, Collini found himself drawn to follow his passion for the liberal arts after the death of his father. He began traveling with the intention of seeing the world, gaining experience with the cultures of other nations, and furthering his understanding of the histories of peoples and places. Upon arriving in Berlin, he sought out a friend of a business associate from his hometown of Florence and was introduced to the famous dancer and mistress of Frederick the Great, Barberini. She facilitated his introduction to the court and he was quickly taken under the wing of the philosopher and writer Voltaire. In this book, Collini details his time spent with Voltaire, describing his work with him, his observations about his interactions with the Prussian court, and his thoughts on the historical and philosophical importance of Voltaire's writing. Collini also provides an account of the intellectual climate in Prussia at the time, describing the king's patronage of the arts and sciences and the presence of many prominent thinkers in Berlin during that era.
