This book delves into the long-debated religious beliefs of Abraham Lincoln, exploring the historical context of his life and the differing perspectives of his contemporaries. The author examines the assertion made by Colonel Robert G. Ingersoll that Lincoln's religious views were aligned with those of Voltaire and Thomas Paine. The book presents a detailed analysis of Lincoln's personal writings, speeches, and actions, seeking to establish whether he was a devout Christian or a freethinker. Through extensive primary sources, including letters, speeches, and eyewitness accounts, the author constructs a nuanced picture of Lincoln's spiritual outlook, addressing the debate surrounding his religious affiliation and the broader context of religious thought during the Civil War era. The book goes beyond simply proving or disproving Ingersoll's claim, exploring the deeper questions about faith and its role in shaping a leader's actions and motivations. It offers a compelling look at how Lincoln navigated the complex religious landscape of his time, and how his own beliefs shaped his leadership during a period of great national strife. This compelling examination of Lincoln's faith invites readers to consider the enduring power of belief in the face of extraordinary challenges. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff tan wrappers. 14pp. Very good. Bit of soiling to outer wrappers, else tight and nice. Collis, a colonel with the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry, published this collection of documents regarding the character of one Frederick Fernandez Cavada (1832-71) to protest Cavada's appointment as United States Consul at Trinidad de Cuba. Cavada was cashiered for "behav[ing] himself in a cowardly manner in the presence of the enemy, by absenting himself from the battle-field" at Fredericksburg, but was reinstated. Cavada displayed similar cowardice at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, but resigned before he could be tried. Whether the publication of Collis's pamphlet affected Cavada's Consul appointment we have not been able to determine. Most unusual. First edition. DORNBUSCH I, P 275A. SABIN 14457.
