Soft Cover. Condition: Fine. First Edition. Lt. shelf wear. Pages fine. On January 9, 1990, Federal District Court Judge A. Wallace Tashima (Central District of California) rejected a Justice Department attempt by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to prohibit the FBI v. The First Amendment from being published. Judge Tashima's ruling cleared the way for its release. The book, authored by Richard Criley, is published by the First Amendment Foundation, a national civil liberties association based in Los Angeles. The book is based on 132,000 pages of FBI documents chronicling the Bureau's 40 years of spying & disruption in its unsuccessful attempts to "neutralize" Frank Wilkinson & other officers & staff of the National Committee Against Repressive Legislation (NCARL) - originally the National Committee to Abolish HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee). Wilkinson, now 76, together with Carl Braden of Kentucky, were the last to go to prison for defying the now defunct House Committee, when they relied upon First Amendment privileges when subpoenaed before the Committee in 1958 in Georgia. The thousands of pages of FBI documents were released under terms of a successful lawsuit, after attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Southern California filed a 1980 lawsuit on behalf of Wilkinson & NCARL. In addition to these discoveries of First Amendment violations by the FBI under Director J. Edgar Hoover, Criley documents recurring FBI abuses under guidelines established by President Reagan in 1983, & continued under President Bush. 95 pages. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.
