Binding of leather spine, covered in cloth strip, over marbled boards in reasonably good condition with two old sticker marks to front board, "seed trial dept" stamp to front board and r…ubbing to both boards. Inside coloured frontis in good condition with a few small marks, all other pages in excellent clean and bright condition with tape repair to margins of pages iv and v. The Mangel Wurzel or the Rhineland was also known as Dick Ruben (the Great Turnip), Dick Wurzel (the Great Root) and Mangel Wurzel. A mistranslation had changed the original German "mangold wurzel" or "root of the beet", into "mangel wurzel", meaning "scarcity root". It might, indeed, be called the Root of Abundance", due to its ability to thrive in harsh conditions and produce a large crop. In his monograph, de Commerell remarks, "it deserves to obtain a decided preference over all other roots, and even over turnips". A nice copy of a scarce book.

Ownership inscription, Jenkins, in…an old hand to title-page. One of many works by the industrious Quaker philanthropist and physician John Coakley Lettsom (17441815), translated by him from the original French of the Abbé de Commerell. 'Alongside botany, fossils, and natural history, another subject in which Lettsom interested himself was scientific agriculture. He was involved in the introduction of the mangel-wurzel, first brought to notice by Sir Richard Jebb in 1786. Lettsom translated a pamphlet on the subject (An Account of the Mangel-wurzel, or Root of Scarcity, from the French of the Abbé de Commerell, 1787); he grew the seed himself and imported a large quantity, which he distributed to farmers and others in Britain as well as in Europe, America, and the West Indies.' Octavo, pp xx, 51, a little age-toning and discolouration, the title page more marked and with a small old paper repair to the upper corner, a near contemporary signature - "R. Prime" - to the title page, otherwise very sound internally. in a later twentieth century simple quarte…r calf binding, a little marked and faded, the boards slightly bowed. Of great interest is the seedsman's advertisement bound in at the front - Observations on the Culture of the Mangel Wurzel, by Jenkins and Gwyther, Nursery and Seedsmen, New Road and in the Regent's Park. Ths extends to two and a half small sides, folded and marked, with the remains of an address and a postmark on the final side. Lettsom's work is rare anyway, and I can find no trace of another copy of the Jenkins and Gwyther advertisement. [Abbe de Commerell had a great interest in husbandry and made a special study of vegetable and fodder crops. Seed of the mangel wurzel fell in to Lettsom's hands and after sowing it at his botanic garden at Grove Hill he found that it produced an excellent crop for both humans and cattle. He immediately commissioned a translation, which went in to three editions within a month. His efforts fell on stony ground, and he was somewhat derided for his enthusiasm. Shortly in to the next century however it was greatly taken up by farmers. It was at this time that Jenkins and Gwyther issued their little pamphlet. Their nursery at Regent's Park subsequently became the gardens of the Royal Botanic Society. The owner of this copy was Richard Prime of Walberton House near Arundel. Prime, a strong Tory, was M.P. for the western division of Sussex 1847-54 and the dominant figure in Walberton in his day.]. { Blanche Henrey 556}.

"Second edition" (but see below) of this translation of Commerell's work on the mangel wurzel, an uncommon beet developed in the 18…th century as a fodder crop for livestock and, when harvested young, an excellent source of nutrition for humans. Commerell (d. 1799), chaplain to the Princess of Lowenstein in the German Lorraine and a member of the Société d'Agriculture de Paris, was interested in husbandry and wrote a monograph in French on the mangel wurzel. Lettsom (1744-1815), physician, philanthropist, and champion of improving projects, was much involved in the introduction of the mangel wurzel in Britain. When seeds of this vegetable were distributed to the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, Lettsom received some, sowed them in his garden at Grove Hill, and found them to be an excellent crop capable of providing food for humans and for cattle. He immediately commissioned a translation of Commerell's book a copy of which had accompanied the seeds from Germany and provided a preface. This is the second of three editions to appear in 1787. Lettsom distributed seeds to farmers and others in Britain as well as in Europe, America, and the West Indies. Today mangel wurzel is widely grown in many countries. The fine plate depicts the mangel wurzel. Nice copy. The title-page states this is the "second edition," but Lettsom's preface, dated 15 November 1787, is "to the third edition."
