Wing C5552. *A commission of array was a grant of authority from the King to named individuals to gather able-bodied men within a particular area for military service. The system was revived by Charles I in 1642, to counteract the Militia Ordinance enacted by Parliament. Commissioners were appointed for each county, and the text of the commission was read in public gatherings in the principal towns of the area.
