"Cette espèce de Tr…aduction libre des Amadis, restitués par Nicolas d'Herberay, Seigneur des Essarts, est faite d'après la belle édition in-folio de la Bibliothèque du Roi, de 1540, imprimée chez Denis Janot [ . ]". La traduction de Tressan s'inspire en effet de la première traduction française par des Essarts, ce dernier s'étant fondé sur des manuscrits en langue castillane (bonnepetite restauration à un coiffe, très bon état par ailleurs). The second edition of Tr…essans free translation, a version that turned the 16th century chivalric romance into hugely popular French novel. This set is from the library (although lacking the bookplate) assembled at Voltaire s former home, the Chateau de Cirey (Champagne) by Mme de Simiane (1761-1835), sometime lover of the Lafayette and later a correspondent of Fanny Burney. Diane-Adelaide De Simiane s early life was colourful and she came to Cirey in 1795 after a period of incarceration during the Terror. Previously she had been married to Charles-Francois de Simiane, who had served with Lafayette in America and who died in mysterious circumstances in 1787. Size: Approximately 6.75 inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition marked and worn. Volume II has a slight hole to the foot of the spine. Joints good condition. Corners good condition worn and aged. Boards good condition Volume II slight discolouration to the top of the front board. Page edges good condition red. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition paper cracked but leather solid and intact, small hole to the base of the front hinge of Vol II. Paste downs good condition marbled.
