No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Original trade card featuring a color illustration of a man painting the words, "Use Our," on another person's umbrella. No date, circa 1870s-1880s. 3 1/4" x 1 3/4." Trade card is very clean and intact overall except for slight corner and edge wear and a few small spots of discoloration on back. A Very Good copy. Trade card advertising Corle's Crackers & Candies, the specialties of the Corle Cracker and Confectionery Company. The Corle Cracker and Confectionery Company was founded by Joseph F. Corle (1831-1896) in Kansas City, Missouri. The company appears to have been successful but was bought out by brothers Jacob and John Loose in 1885 after which they renamed it the Loose Brothers Manufacturing Company. Jacob and John changed the company's main products to biscuits and processed baked goods. After it was renamed to the American Biscuit Company and Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company (the brothers partnered with John Wiles), the company was finally named Sunshine Biscuits, Inc. in 1946. Sunshine Biscuits enjoyed decades of success, releasing a diverse line of baked goods including Krispy Saltine Crackers, Honey Grahams, and Hydrox cookies (predecessor of Oreos). Sunshine Biscuits still exists to this day as a brand name although the company was officially sold over the years to different companies. Most recently, Sunshine Biscuits was purchased by the Keebler Company in 1996, which, in turn, was bought out by the Kellogg Company in 2001. Today, Sunshine Biscuits branded products include Cheez-Its, Krispy Saltine Crackers, Krispy Soup & Oyster Crackers, and Nut Sundae Cookies. Trade cards are antique business cards that first became popular during the late seventeenth century in Paris and Lyon, France and London, England. Trade cards were often given by business owners and proprietors to patrons and customers as a way to promote their businesses. Prior to the use of street addresses, trade cards had maps so clients could locate the associated business. Many of these cards also incorporated elaborate designs, illustrations, and other decorative features. Trade cards became popular in the United States during the nineteenth century in the period after the Civil War. The late nineteenth century also saw the advent of trade card collecting as a hobby. While they are no longer in use, trade cards influenced the formation of trading cards and were the predecessors of modern-day business cards.
