Signed presentation inscription from Bophuthatswana government to title page. 4to; original dark blue rexine with lettering in white, and central coat-of-arms onlay in silver-gilt geometric surround to upper board; matching slipcase; pp. 216; liberally illustrated with full-colour photographs and maps. Slipcase a little rubbed; backstrip slightly snagged at head; trace of foxing. Very good condition. This lavish publication is evidently intended as a publicity exercise for the model of separate development represented by the bogus country of the title. Granted nominal independence by South Africa's National Party government in the year of this book's publication, Bophuthatswana was the pièce de résistance of the Bantustan system, one of the pillars of apartheid. A scattering of disconnected territories in South Africa's interior, and occupied largely by Tswana-speaking people, Bophuthatswana had considerable mineral reserves, producing fully two thirds of the world's platinum, and also earned much through casinos, then illegal in South Africa itself. Lucas Mangope's government was the subject of controversy and resistance, and crumbled following much unrest and the dissolution of Bophuthatswana as an entity in 1994.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 111 pages. Published in 1999. Exhibition Monograph. One of the best retrospectives on the photographic art and achievement of Gerardo Suter. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The Exhibition Monograph is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Gerardo Suter: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine and large flaps, as issued. Art photographs by Gerardo Suter. Essays by Mary Schneider Enriquez and Olivier Debroise, the renowned scholar of 20th-century Mexican photography. Printed on glossy stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the travelling retrospective exhibition of the same name, which was organized by the Americas Society New York, and commenced at the Americas Gallery New York City on February 10, 1999. Presents Gerardo Suter's "Labyrinth of Memory". His very first solo exhibition in the United States. In his photographs and mixed-media installations, Suter employs themes and subjects, drawn from pre-Columbian myths and cultures, in order to create powerful and haunting metaphors of contemporary Latin-American personae. The exhibition ranges from early compositions of enigmatic landscapes and ruins to more dramatic male and female nude figures (wearing sado-masochistic masks and other ritualistic props) to monumental installations that combine photography with video and performance art. Born in Argentina in 1957, Gerardo Suter has lived in Mexico since 1970. Largely self-taught as an artist, he emerged as one of Latin America's most original voices in the early 1980's. Suter has become an influential figure for his move away from documentary photography towards a more expressive art that now includes innovative combinations of photographic images with video, installation, and performance. "His work explores themes of memory, nostalgia, and the persistence of the past in mysterious scenes of pre-Columbian architectural remains. These startling and compelling images seem to suggest the simultaneously fearful and tantalizingly sensual immediacy of Latin America's pre-Hispanic inheritance. Gerardo Suter has pushed the boundaries of straight photography, printing on sheets of transparent acetate, which are often combined to create enormous multi-panel images. He has incorporated these into room-sized installations along with sound and video elements, encompassing the viewer in enclosed, multi-sensory, and ritual environments. The depicted figures, less explicitly pre-Columbian in their references than those in the earlier series, have become more universal in their emotional charge. Evokes the primal forces of life and death and the dualities of human existence" (Elizabeth Ferrer). An absolute "must-have" title for Gerardo Suter collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (on the day of the exhibition and book launch) in black ink-pen on the title page by the artist/photographer: "Gerardo Suter N. Y. February 10, 1999". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great Exhibition Monograph. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Based in Mexico, Suter seldom ever signs his books. This is the only one we have ever found. A rare signed copy thus. 30 plates. One of the greatest artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy ISBN 1879128187. Signed by Author.
