This article reports the first human total artificial heart (TAH) operation, which occurred on April 4, 1969. The patient, Haskell Karp, had the artificial heart for 64 hours until a heart transplant operation was performed, after which he lived another 32 hours. The Liotta artificial heart that Cooley used is now at the Smithsonian Institution. Cooley did not perform another human TAH operation until 1981. Garrison-Morton 7810. Signed by Author(s).
