Following the initial occupation by Austrian forces under Baron de Mylius, the complexities of the revolutionary fervor grip the populace and the city falls under French control. Despite the initial enthusiasm for the ideals of libertà , à galità , fraternità , tensions arose due to economic hardship, leading to a second brief Austrian occupation before Malines was definitively annexed by the French Republic. The author provides a detailed account of the city's struggles, from the imposition of heavy contributions and forced loans to the suppression of religious institutions and the introduction of the republican calendar. Against this backdrop, the book deftly explores the shifting allegiances and human costs of war, shedding light on the complexities of a society grappling with the challenges of a new political order. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1.
