Vélin souple d'époque, dos lisse, tache sur le premier plat, rosace sur le second plat. Édition revue et augmentée de cet ouvrage fondamental pour l'instruction des pilotes et la navigation. Son auteur, le père Samson Le Cordier (1660 - 1720), hydrographe du Roi, suit l'enseignement maritime donné à Dieppe par l'abbé Denys. Il navigue ensuite au service de l'État et en 1681 comme pilote dans l'équipage de l' "Écueil", vaisseau de quatrième rang. Blessé au cours d'une bataille, il est contraint à quitter le service actif de la marine. Déterminé à utiliser son expérience pour l'instruction des jeunes navigateurs, il ouvre chez lui en 1682 une école d'hydrographie. Vers cette même époque, il reçoit le titre d'hydrographe examinateur des pilotes et jaugeurs des navires. En 1690, le Roi le nomme professeur d'hydrographie à Dieppe où il succède à l'abbé Denys. L'art du pilotage prend son essence dans l'insuffisante familiarité des capitaines avec les régions qu'ils devaient fréquenter pour le commerce, notamment avec l'ouverture des marchés et des transports internationaux. Un pilote ayant la connaissance locale des zones maritimes était donc nécessaire pour conduire les navires à quai. Le présent traité paraît pour la première fois en 1683 alors que Colbert vient de redéfinir les grands principes du droit du pilote et du capitaine de navire (ordonnance de 1681). De nos jours, cette profession demeure au cur des échanges commerciaux maritimes. L'ouvrage de Le Cordier, composé de deux parties, est destiné à instruire les pilotes en leur apprenant les fondements de la navigation. La première partie, écrite sous forme de questions-réponses, contient un "abrégé de la Sphere, les principes nécessaires pour trouver l'heure de la pleine Mer dans les Ports, le jour & le quantième du mois auquel doivent arriver les Fêtes mobiles & immobiles, les différentes. [.] Avec une Instruction générale sur le Pilotage, en faveur de ceux qui veulent se rendre experts dans cette science, & se mettre aussi au fait des manoeuvres d'un Vaisseau." Cette partie traite des pratiques de pilotage; du cycle solaire et lunaire; de la manière de trouver l'heure de la pleine mer dans différents ports; des lettres fériales et de leur usage pour connaître le jour d'entrée des mois et le jour de la semaine auquel arrive une fête; de la hauteur du pôle, de la longitude et de la latitude, de l'estime du chemin, des cartes marines ainsi que des manoeuvres des vaisseaux selon les situations des ports. Cet ouvrage est destiné à être utilisé sur le terrain comme en atteste: "la table pour trouver aisément et sans aucun calcul l'heure de la pleine mer en toutes sortes de ports les jours de lune étant connus", placée au début de l'ouvrage pour "faire plaisir [.] de ceux qui en auront besoin". "Né au Havre le 13 décembre 1647, Samson Le Cordier suivit à Dieppe, dont l'école d'hydrographie était plus renommée que celle du Havre, l'enseignement maritime du célèbre abbé Guillaume Denys. Il revint au Havre, navigua beaucoup au service de l'Etat, et devint « premier pilote entretenu au département du Havre-de-Grâce pour la conduite des vaisseaux de Sa Majesté ». En 1681, il figurait comme pilote dans l'équipage de « l'Ecueil », vaisseau de quatrième rang, qui était commandé par le fameux Panetié et qui fit campagne contre les corsaires de Salé. Au cours d'une rencontre navale, il reçut une blessure qui le contraignit à quitter le service actif de la marine. Cet accident le détermina à utiliser son expérience des choses de la mer pour l'instruction des jeunes navigateurs. En 1682, il tenait chez lui une école particulière d'hydrographie, fréquentée par sept ou huit écoliers seulement.
