There is no bookplate nor signature of previous owner. Not a remainder or library book. The illustrated wraps are in fair condition (edge-chipping and shelf-rubbing). 9 ¼ x 7 ½, 103 pages, 13 ounces. 7 ¾ x 5 ½, 125 pages, 5 ounces XX This Handbook of American judo is a thorough study in the methods and techniques of hand-fighting. it is based upon the classic jiujitsu but incorporates the most recent improvements in the scientific development of modes of personal combat. It also borrows from wrestling, boxing and la Savate [foot fighting], those special features that are peculiarly adapted for a system of hand fighting. Bernard J. Cosneck graduated from the University of Illinois in 1934 where he majored in physical education. He was twice Big 10 intercollegiate wrestling champion in 1932 and 1934. He became interested in all forms of hand to hand fighting, learning all the tricks of Japanese jiu jitsu, French foot fighting and Chinese boxing. In training thousands of men for the United States Coast Guard, he helped devise new methods in personal combat and tested and improved old ones until he had gathered sufficient material for an authoritative book on hand to hand fighting. As chief boatswain mate he was judo supervisor at the United States Coast Guard station, Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn New York.
