First Edition
Softcover. Condition: g+ to vg. First edition. Large octavo. 36pp. Original decorative wrappers. In the 1880s, Johannesburg was the largest city in the Transvaal and the principal center of Jewish life in South Africa. On Jan. 29, 1888, the Witwatersrand Gold-Fields' Jewish association bought two building-plots on President street for a synagogue, and at the same time changed its name to "Witwatersrand Hebrew Congregation." The Rev. Mark L. Harris of Kimberley, who preached at the laying of the foundation-stone (Nov. 9, 1888), was elected rabbi, retaining that post till March 31, 1898. He was succeeded by the Rev. W. Wolf (reader) and Dr. Joseph Herman Hertz (rabbi). Illustrated with numerous b/w photographic reproductions, this booklet was published to commemorate the 10 year-anniversary of the Witwatersrand Old Hebrew Congregation. Minor and sporadic creasing along edges of wrappers. Faint creasing mark at center of pages. Wrappers in overall good+, interior in good+ to very good condition.
