In the 1880s, Johannesburg was the largest city in the Transvaal and the principal center of Jewish life in South Africa. On Jan. 29, 1888, the Witwatersrand Gold-Fields' Jewish association bought two building-plots on President stre…et for a synagogue, and at the same time changed its name to "Witwatersrand Hebrew Congregation." The Rev. Mark L. Harris of Kimberley, who preached at the laying of the foundation-stone (Nov. 9, 1888), was elected rabbi, retaining that post till March 31, 1898. He was succeeded by the Rev. W. Wolf (reader) and Dr. Joseph Herman Hertz (rabbi). Illustrated with numerous b/w photographic reproductions, this booklet was published to commemorate the 10 year-anniversary of the Witwatersrand Old Hebrew Congregation. Minor and sporadic creasing along edges of wrappers. Faint creasing mark at center of pages. Wrappers in overall good+, interior in good+ to very good condition.

Alessandro Mattei (1744-1820, from the Roman aristocratic House of Mattei; Prelate of the Sacred Congregation of the Council of Trent of 1775, Archbishop of Ferrara in 1777, became cardinal in 1779, Bishop of Palestrina in 1800, - of Porto-Santa Rufina in 1809 and of Ostia in 1814, from 1817 to his death he was Archpriest of St Peter's Basilica; he was significant Figure in Papal Diplomacy of the Napoleonic Period, imprisoned by the French after they occupied Ferrara in 1796, forced to sign the 'Treaty of Tolentino'* and later became one of Napoleon's 'Cardinali Neri'):
