The scene was sketched by William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854) and engraved by Charles Cousen (1819 - 1889.) Dimensions including margins: 9.5" x 6.25". Light sun fading; no foxing; no chips or tears. Framed and glazed. Print looks to be in very good order except for faint toning at the edge of the mount window although not examined out of the frame. Hand-coloured. Mount window 140 x 200 mm. Frame overall 255 x 315 mm. James Renwick being led to execution in the Grassmarket in 1688. Renwick was the last Covenanter to be martyred before the accession of William II secured Presbyterianism in Scotland in 1689. (Despite the accepted title of the painting, note that only one prisoner is shown.) 25.5 x 31.5 cm.
