RECOLLECTIONS AND LETTERS OF GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE By His Son - Robert E. Lee Jr. 1924 *** FREE SHIPPUNG within contiguous U.S. *** Norvell Caskie Jones Lyon Collection (Private Library Original) Recollections and Letters of General Robert E. Lee (1904) is an intimate biography and primary source collection compiled by the general's youngest son, Captain Robert E. Lee Jr. Because Lee never wrote an autobiography or memoirs (unlike Ulysses S. Grant), this book is considered the closest look we have into his private thoughts and personality. Personal Letters: The core of the book consists of Lee's private correspondence with his wife, Mary Custis Lee, and his seven children. These letters reveal a side of him rarely seen in military histories?showing him as a devoted (and often worried) father and husband. First-Hand Memories: Captain Lee provides "recollections" of his childhood at Arlington, his service as a soldier under his father's command, and their life together after the war. Post-War Focus: Interestingly, about two-thirds of the book focuses on the five years after 1865. It covers his time as the President of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) and his efforts to encourage Southerners to accept the war's outcome and rebuild the country.
