Original gilt-titled dark red cloth lacking the jacket 17x24cm. 288pp including 3 b/w maps in-text + 25 b/w photo illustrations on glossy paper as called for (the plate indexed as facing p230 is facing p214). Covers good, marked to the cloth. Interiors good, foxed in places wit…h staining to pp86-87. Inscribed postumously on the author's behalf by his brother to the ffep as follows: "Mrs Paine April 1950 / from Capt Q.C.A. Craufurd / & Comr. C.E.V. Craufurd". Laid in is a (1)pp ms letter in the same hand signed by the brother with his letterhead (Ness View, Lydd, Kent). The recipient is unnamed but presumably Mrs Paine with the date and a curious message corresponding to the inscription: "Apr 1950 / This book has a queer history. My brother passed over two years ago & the book is out of print. However, I ---ed(?) him if he could assist me to procure a copy by putting into my mind where to write for a copy second hand. / I found this copy in my bookshelf in the empty place where the one I sent you came from as a result. / [signed] Quentin C.A. Craufurd". Sir Quentin Charles Alexander 6th Baronet Craufurd (1875-1957), also served in the Royal Navy attaining the rank of Captain. He was an Associate Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, and Fellow of the Institute of Physics (The Peerage, 297236).
