Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. No Dust Jacket. Large 8vo. pp xxi, 394, [4]. Original publisherÕs black cloth, lettered gilt at spine. Illustrated in b/w throughout. Aleister Crowley's copy with a note on the first blank in his hand in pencil 'Aleister Crowley 1906 bought at the request of Oscar Eckenstein.' A rarity from the Great Beast's little known mountaineering years. Eckenstein, son of an exiled German Jew and and English woman was Crowley's friend and main climbing partner, although he usually preferred to climb alone reckoning it was safer. This was a practice condemned by the Abrahams.Eckenstein was highly eccentric and something of a philosopher. He shared with Crowleya great disdain for the Alpine Club. Crowley said of him 'Eckstein had all the civilized qualities and I all the savage ones.' Eckensteiin is mentioned in the text of the book 10 times. AC has annotated about 60 pages with about 250 words all in pencil, also marginal linings and exclamation marks and short notes such as 'Shit!' 'Good God!' 'by what ass" 'turd-like nature.' 'disgusting beast!' The tone of Crowley's numerous annotations is humorous, mocking , sarcastic and critical-- much of it aimed at the Abrahams timidity and lack of the spirit of adventure, also correcting facts. Crowley writes on the verso of the front blank-- 'Bernard Shaw has remarked that the Jew will always become leader by his brains and inagination. There is no disputing the quality of Messrs Abrahams imagination.' He refers to a local climbing handbook to the area as being more accurate and better. Eckenstein although he is treated flatteringly in the book greatly objected to it. Crowley noted that Eckenstein had '.an almost fanatical objection to publicity' and this may have upset him as wellas the publicising of a climbing area that climbers han almost spiritual realstinship with and feared hordes of tourists (see Hankinnson's 'A Century Of the Crags.' .A great rarity from a little documented part of the great occultist's life. Would repay further research. Very good indeed.

Printed on thick creamy Dutch Rag paper with wide margins in Bodoni Type. Internally very good clean tight sound square, attractive scrolled armorial bookplate of John Richard Sofio to pastedown, with ownership inscription of J. Stuart Williams upon, browning limited to free endpapers not intruding or detracting, edges of leaves attractively untrimmed. Bound in original full wide weave brown cloth, with bright gilt text on red calf leather label. Abraham Cowley was a leading poet of the 17th century, indeed Milton held that Cowley, Spenser and Shakespeare were the three best English poets. Nonesuch Press, publishers of the volume in hand, were unusual amongst private press, in that it used a small Albion Hand Press to exquisitely design and produce books which were then commercially printed, since the owner Francis Meynell wanted to demonstrate that Mechanical means could be made to serve fine ends.
