Satisfaction Guaranteed. William Penn Adair Rogers was an American stage and film actor, vaudeville performer, cowboy, humorist, newspaper columnist, and social commentator from Oklahoma. He was a Cherokee citizen born in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. Known as "Oklahoma's Favorite Son",Rogers was born to a Cherokee family in Indian Territory (now part of Oklahoma). As an entertainer and humorist, he traveled around the world three times, made 71 films (50 silent films and 21 "talkies"), and wrote more than 4,000 nationally syndicated newspaper columns. By the mid-1930s Rogers was hugely popular in the United States, its leading political wit and the highest paid of Hollywood film stars. He died in 1935 with aviator Wiley Post when their small airplane crashed in northern Alaska. Rogers's vaudeville rope act led to success in the Ziegfeld Follies, which in turn led to the first of his many movie contracts. His 1920s syndicated newspaper column and his radio appearances increased his visibility and popularity. Rogers crusaded for aviation expansion and provided Americans with first-hand accounts of his world travels. His earthy anecdotes and folksy style allowed him to poke fun at gangsters, prohibition, politicians, government programs, and a host of other controversial topics in a way that found general acclaim from a national audience with no one offended. His aphorisms, couched in humorous terms, were widely quoted: "I am not a member of an organized political party. I am a Democrat." Rogers even provided an epigram on his most famous epigram: When I die, my epitaph, or whatever you call those signs on gravestones, is going to read: "I joked about every prominent man of my time, but I never met a man I dident [sic] like." I am so proud of that, I can hardly wait to die so it can be carved. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. First Edition. Gray over dusky rose cloth, black lettering. Spine slightly cocked, corners bumped, a little edge wear and rubbing, some sunning along top and bottom edges. Jacket in new Brodart, spine sunned, some chipping along top and bottom edges and along flap creases. Overall, an attractive copy. ; This is a presentation copy inscribed by the author to Douglas F. Storer on the front end paper. There are a number of personal touches by Mr. Croy, including several tipped in photos and newspaper articles, humorous handwritten notes to and about Douglas Storer. There is a typed note to Storer on the letterhead of the Semiramis Hotel, Cairo, and a blurb from the publisher including purchasing options. It seems likely that this Douglas Storer is the one who produced Ripley's Believe It or Not from 1933 to about 1960, and subsequently founded the Amazing but True franchise of books, radio shows, etc. ; 7¾" - 9¾" Tall; 242 pages; " If ever a tale of the pioneer west was unfolded 'whose lightest word could make each particular hair to stand on end,' this account of the ill-fated Donner Party is it. Eighty-seven people set out for the promised land of California - only forty-four survived to reach their goal, after a year of incredible hardship and suffering. Homer Croy tells the true story of this tragic Odyssey in an exciting and suspenseful narrative that holds the reader spellbound from start to finish. "In a way, this recounts the consequences of a fateful decision. After a grueling trek across the Great Plains, the Donner Party arrived at Fort Laramie in the fall of 1846. Because of the lateness of the season they took a 500-mile cut-off. This proved their undoing, for they reached the 7,000-foot pass in the Sierras, which today bears their name, in furious snow-storms which trapped them there for months - till they were reduced to chewing boiled ox hides and, finally, to cannibalism. Almost incredible acts of heroism as well as dark deeds of violence all come vividly to life in these pages. " ; Signed by Author.
