Post-incunable parisien non daté, longtemps considéré comme incunable, il a été récemment déclassé. Anciennement estimé comme datant de 1499, les bibliographes du Renouard considèrent maintenant qu'il n'est qu'une réimpression de l'édition Jean Petit de 1508 (elle-même anciennement considérée comme incunable). Le célèbre théologien Pierre d'Ailly, de son nom latin Petrus de Alliaco fut surnommé L'aigle des docteurs de la France et le Marteau des hérétiques. Il est né à Compiègne en 1350 et fut nommé Grand Maître du collège de Navarre en 1384. Il eut pour élèves Gerson et Clémangis, devint chancelier de l'Université puis confesseur de Charles VI. Il fit instituer la fête de la Sainte-Trinité et joua un rôle éclatant au Concile de Constance et finit comme légat du Pape à Avignon. De la experiencia de tres tipos de actos, concluimos que el alma es en sí misma triple. De esto surgen tres preguntas: sobre la distinción local de las almas en el mismo soporte; luego, suponiendo que no hay distinción según el lugar, si, pese a ello, realmente se diferencian; y, finalmente, si el alma misma es distinta de sus potencias. A continuación analiza qué encierra la definición aceptada de alma, viendo que es en sí misma, triple. Preguntándose por esa multiplicidad, considera más probable, apelando al Principio de economía, la verdadera identidad, primero, del alma vegetativa y el alma sensitiva, arguyendo que es la misma alma la que entendemos por una razón como vegetativa y por otra como sensitiva y que, por la razón natural, la entendemos como intelectiva. La originalidad de Pierre d'Ailly es que continúa oponiendo esta conclusión, guiada por la razón natural, a una dificultad planteada desde el punto de vista de la fe: el alma intelectual parece tener atributos contrarios a los de las otras dos, a saber, que es indivisible, ingenerable e incorruptible. Por eso, dice, algunos sostienen que hay dos almas distintas. Sin embargo, según él, se trata de un problema indecidible (problema neutrum) y que, por lo tanto, pueden sostenerse ambos puntos de vista, y quien quiera defender la identidad debe afirmar que el alma sensible del hombre es indivisible y no es de la misma naturaleza que la de los animales; que el sujeto de la sensación es el compuesto, y no el alma sola. Así puede mantenerse la afirmación de la identidad desde el punto de vista natural, y el carácter indecidible si se incluye la fe.
