Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. An elegant edition of Juvenal's Satires. Calf leather boards, spine with raised bands. Leather reflects the book's age with bending at the corners and some areas of abrasion including of the titles towards the head of the spine. The binding remains tight but the front board, while still attached to the book block, is loose and needs careful handling (image). Internally, the other condition-related issue is the degree of tanning with occasional spotting. The carefully laid out text is still generally legible but the tanning is particularly noticeable on the preliminary and final pages - see image of title page as an example. Dedication in ink, dated 1885, opp. title page - again see image. pp. 412 (NB there is a lengthy index and preface etc - neither of which are paginated). 8vo. Leather Bound. Thick 8vo. The text encompasses 525 pages, but the index is unpaginated. Bound-in after this is the 'Satyrarum' (Satirarum) of the 1st century AD Roman satiric poet Auli Persii Flacci (Aulus Persius Flaccus); in six books of 112 pages with an unpaginated index at end. Text throughout is in Latin. All pages clean, although there is some rippling. One small burn hole (?) to front cover, usual staining to vellum, although less than might otherwise be expected. Binding is good, although front hinge starting. Overall, a good, to good plus, copy. This is a new edition ('Editio Nova'), with commentaries, a life of Juvenal, and a bibliography of various editions. Decimus Junius Juvenalis, known in English as Juvenal, was a Roman poet (1st to 2nd century AD), who wrote a series of poems which, together, are called the 'Satires' ('Satyrae'). He wrote at least 16 poems in dactylic hexameter form, which were divided between five books, and which covered many, if not most, aspects of life in pagan Rome. There is no complete list of Juvenal's manuscripts but at least 500 medieval copies are known to exist. This copy is bound in vellum with an elaborate device embossed in gilt on the front board. As was the practice then, the spine is hand-lettered with the title, year, and showing was appears to be a Roman soldier, flanked by two maidens in front of whom kneels a satyr. All 16 of the poems are present, followed by a comprehensive index.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. D. Junii Juvenalis Ey Aulii Persii Flacci Satyrae. Birminghamiae Typis Johannis Baskerville MDCCLXI [John Baskervile. 1761] Hardcover. 240 pages. Full leather binding. Brown leather with gold borders. Raised cords, spine label maroon with gold lettering. An early binding but I doubt it's the original binding. Marbled endpapers. Foreedges marbled. Name signed on blank side of marbled endpaper dated 1876. Book measures 9 x 12 inches. Wonderful wide margins and large type, distinctive traits of Baskerville's best work. Text in Latin. Some light foxing towards the end, but nowhere very aggressive. It seems that Baskerville may have used a different paper for the final 25 pages, as I have seen 2 other copies of this book with foxing beginning in the exact same place, after page 215. Binding tight and attractive with slight wear to the hinges. A very fine copy of a imprint that is instantly recognizably Baskerville's work.
