Seller: Vero Beach Books, Vero Beach, FL, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Very good condition polished dark blue cloth boards with bright gold front cover and spine lettering. Includes Preface by Walter L. Pyle; Preface to the Second Edition by Walter L. Pyle dated August 1, 1904; Introduction; Appendix; and Index. Also includes, after the Index, an eleven page collection of catalogs and books dealing with various medical subjects such as Obstetrics and Gynecologic Nursing, Bacteriology and Surgical Technic for Nurses, Essentials of Minor Surgery, Bandaging, and Venereal Diseases, etc. "Strange as it may seem, the one subject which every fair-minded person admits should be taught thoroughly - namely, how to keep healthy - has been largely neglected. With all the recent agitation for educational reform, there remains, to a great degree, the same indifference to the proper teaching of the care of the body, regarding which Herbert Spencer lectured the pedagogic world over forty years ago.The literature for the layman pertaining to personal hygiene is in great measure unsatisfactory and irresponsible. Many of the so-called "health books" are of very questionable authorship, often the compilation of a layman, perhaps an amateur pathologist, an inaccurate physiologist, a moralist of vague opinions, with, unfortunately, a tendency to cater to the prurient. Such books make hypochondriacs of their readers, and if they include advice as to self-treatment, they may do great harm. It is the duty of the professional author to stem and correct any morbid attitude of his readers, and not to add to it under the pretext of necessary explanation. In this connection may be aptly quoted the following abstract from a recent editorial in the British Medical Journal: "If we may speak for parents in the medical profession, it is impossible to suppose the wise fathers and mothers could desire to suggest to their sons or daughters either certain problems raised or in many cases the explanations proffered. There is a multitude of the best parents who think that their way is not made easier by the so-called moral reformer, but rather the reverse. And there are many of the most wholesome-minded boys and sweetest girls who hate him with a perfect hatred. The rest wold probably do very well without him." - excerpt from the Introduction.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: New. 362 pages : 25 cm. Volcanoes have played a profound role in shaping our planet, and volcanic activity is a major hazard locally, regionally and globally. Many volcanoes are, however, poorly accessible and sparsely monitored. Consequently, remote sensing is playing an increasingly important role in tracking volcano behaviour, while synoptic remote sensing techniques have begun to make major contributions to volcanological science. Volcanology is driven in part by the operational concerns of volcano monitoring and hazard management, but the goal of volcanological science is to understand the processes that underlie volcanic activity. This volume shows how we may reach a deeper understanding by integrating remote sensing measurements with modelling approaches and, if available, ground-based observations. It includes reviews, and papers that report technical advances and document key case studies. They span a range of remote sensing applications to volcanoes, from volcano deformation, thermal anomalies and gas fluxes, to the tracking of eruptive ash and gas plumes. The result is a state-of-the-art overview of the ever-growing importance of remote sensing to volcanology.

These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications.
