First Edition
Condition: Good. First Edition. 216 pp., plus fold-out map. Also a pink slip is bound in between pages 50 and 51 with a note from the publisher to recipients, regarding the publication -- 100,000 copies were printed at a cost of $25,000. Beginning on page 51, each page is devoted to a single business, with rather detailed information about the business since the minuscule font allows for a lot of information to be crammed into the small space. In other words, 166 businesses are represented. Some of them are still businesses well-known, even if the business as such is no longer around, such as Singer Sewing Machines, Steinway Pianos or Fairbanks Scales. Bibliophiles will surely know of R. Hoe & Co., who manufactured printing presses, the fortune amassed thereby funding his legendary library and other bookish pursuits. Others are business types long gone, such as stereoscopic views, although with these, a company could be remembered still for other things, such as Appleton, the publisher. Among carriage trade businesses there is Crouch & Fitzgerald, which survived until relatively recently. Or a business could have gone on for many decades later, even until today, but with a name change or two or three. The first 50 pages of text provide a potpourri of useful information and some less essential but curious and interesting information, such as a list of the city's nine bell towers. Among the useful content are things such as the list of docks, the names and locations of churches of various denominations, or a table of distances between the Battery, the Exchange and City Hall and 20 other locations, the farthest being in the hinterland of 63rd Street! The blindstamped limp wraps are pretty severely soiled, with dampstaining, some blistering or raising of the surface cloth from its base, edge fraying and color loss. Large dampstain affecting virtually all leaves to greater or lesser extent and giving the overall appearance of the interior a grubbiness. Broken hinging, but book holding securely. Importantly, though, the map is generally quite clean and miraculously without significant defect. And often the book, when it turns up, is lacking its map. Wraps, blindstamped. Or semi-rigid card.
