Unique artist's cast (edition 1/1), signed by the artist. Height: 65 cm. With artist's signed certificate of authenticity and accompanying letter (2025). This exceptional, one-of-a-kind hand-painted bronze sculpture is a life-sized portrait of No. 1, the favourite falcon of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Founding Father of the United Arab Emirates. It stands as one of the most remarkable modern sculptural tributes to Arabian falconry and as a unique record of an artistic collaboration made possible through a personal invitation from Sheikh Zayed himself. - In February 2000, the British wildlife sculptor and painter David Cemmick was invited by the late Sheikh Zayed to Abu Dhabi, through the arrangement of Professor Dr Michael Lierz, the pioneering German avian veterinarian who then directed the Sheikh's private falconry hospital. During this visit, Cemmick was granted extraordinary access to the Sweihan Falconry Training Ground in the Al Ain desert and to the Sheikh's private wildlife collection on Sir Bani Yas Island. There, he studied, sketched, and painted the ruler's prized falcons and rare species. - Among the birds he observed was No. 1, a striking white Gyr/Barbary cross falcon described to him as Sheikh Zayed's personal favourite. Deeply inspired, Cemmick later recalled: "In February 2000 I was the guest of Professor Dr Michael Lierz I was invited by the Sheikh to visit his falcon training ground in the Sweihan desert and there drew and painted his favourite Gyr falcon named No. 1. This hand-painted bronze one-of-a-kind sculpture and many studies of the Sheikh's falcons and rare species at his animal reserve on Sir Bani Yas Island were the results of my visit. It was a thrill and a real honour for me to be given this opportunity." - Following his return to England, Cemmick sculpted No. 1 in French sculpting wax, meticulously capturing the falcon's noble bearing and hooded poise upon its traditional stand. The work was cast in bronze in 2009 and, in 2013, hand-painted by the artist - the only example of its kind in the world (edition 1/1), personally executed and never to be repeated. - During the same period, Cemmick also created two related sculptures of Sheikh Zayed's falcons: a life-sized Peregrine Falcon at the moment of release (edition 1/1, hand-painted); and a Peregrine Falcon Head (edition 1/4, hand painted), one of which was presented by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as a personal gift to His Highness Sheikh Zayed during a visit to London. Together, these three sculptures form an exceptional artistic group directly inspired by the falcons of Sheikh Zayed. - Cemmick's accompanying correspondence and certificate of authenticity confirm both the sculpture's singular status and its direct connection to Sheikh Zayed's falconry. The work thus represents the culmination of a rare artistic exchange, and stands as a lasting testament to the cultural heritage of falconry in the Arabian Peninsula. - Cemmick's sculptures, celebrated for their anatomical precision and vitality, have appeared in international exhibitions and auctions. Yet no other work in his uvre possesses the same combination of royal association, documentary significance, and absolute uniqueness as the present Gyr Falcon (No. 1). - Created by the artist following his invitation from Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to visit his private falconry and wildlife reserves, Abu Dhabi, 2000. - Hand-painted bronze cast and finished by the artist in the United Kingdom, 2013. - Accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity and letter from the artist (2025) confirming edition 1/1. - Private collection.
