He is best-known for his codification project in which he wanted to reform and codify U.S. common law, particularly in the state of New York. Although Field's codification was only adopted in a small part of the state, other states and US territories such as California, Idaho, Montana, North and South Dakota, and Guam were more ready to accept his civil codes. In 1877, Field served out the unexpired term of Ely Smith in the U.S. House of Representatives. Signed by Author(s).
