Hardback. Condition: USED_VERYGOOD. First Edition. 1887. First edition. vii, [i], 448pp. and 15 portraits on 3 plates. The 1st Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers was a Scottish Volunteer unit of the British Army. Originally raised in Glasgow from 1859, it later became a battalion of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). During World War I it served on the Western Front and in Ireland. Converted into an anti-aircraft regiment just before World War II, it served during The Blitz and in the campaign in North West Europe, and continued in air defence role in the postwar years until 1955. This book provides an account of the origin and early days of the Volunteer movement in Glasgow, and the 1st Lanark Rifle Volunteers from its emergence in 1859 up to the 1880s. The book is bound in the original dark green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and gold stamped regimental emblem on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. There is some white spotting, probably from paint splashes, on the front board and a little bubbling to the cloth on the rear board. There is wear to the cloth on the corner tips and a little damage to the cloth on the bottom corner tips. The spine ends are bumped with some nicks to the cloth and there are two small holes in the cloth on the front spine edge. The contents are tight and clean with a signed inscription from the author on the back of the front free endpaper that reads: "To William Miller, Esq. with D. Howie's compliments - Janry 24, 1888". The front endpapers appear to have split down the spine gutter and a previous owner has carried out a rough tape repair down the spine gutter. There is a thin (unrepaired) split to the rear endpapers. Inscribed & Signed by the Auth.
