Paperback. Condition: New. The Hanford History Project held the "Legacies of the Manhattan Project at 75 Years" conference in March 2017. Its Richland, Washington, meeting venue was a stone's throw from the southern-most edge of the Hanford Nuclear Site--the place where workers produced the plutonium that fueled the "Fat Man" nu…clear bomb dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945.The symposium's appeal extended well beyond local interest. Professionals from a broad array of backgrounds--working scientists, government employees, retired health physicists, downwinders, representatives from community groups, impassioned lay people, as well as scholars working in a host of different academic fields--attended and gave presentations. The diverse gathering, with its wide range of expertise, stimulated a genuinely remarkable exchange of ideas. In Legacies of the Manhattan Project, Hanford Histories series editor Michael Mays combines extensively revised essays first presented at the conference with newly commissioned research. Together, they provide a timely reevaluation of the Manhattan Project and its many complex repercussions, as well as some beneficial innovations. Covering topics from print journalism, activism, nuclear testing, and science and education to health physics, environmental cleanup, and kitsch, the compositions delve deep into familiar matters, but also illuminate historical crevices left unexplored by earlier generations of scholars. In the process, they demonstrate how the Manhattan Project lives on.

Paperback. Condition: New. In 1988, Sandi and Larry Zobrest sued a suburban Tucson, Arizona, school district that had denied their hearing-impaired son a taxpayer-funded interpreter in his Roman Catholic high school. The Catalina Foothills School District argued that providing a public resource for a private, religious school cr…eated an unlawful crossover between church and state. The Zobrests, however, claimed that the district had infringed on both their First Amendment right to freedom of religion and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Bruce J. Dierenfield and David A. Gerber use the Zobrests' story to examine the complex history and jurisprudence of disability accommodation and educational mainstreaming. They look at the family's effort to acquire educational resources for their son starting in early childhood and the choices the Zobrests made to prepare him for life in the hearing world rather than the deaf community. Dierenfield and Gerber also analyze the thorny church-state issues and legal controversies that informed the case, its journey to the U.S. Supreme Court, and the impact of the high court's ruling on the course of disability accommodation and religious liberty.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Like New. First Edition. [LAW]. Eds. Thomas M. J. Mollers, Andreas Heinemann. Contributors: David J. Gerber, Antti Aine, Cornelia Marin, Jeremy Scholes, Manola Scotton, et al. "The Enforcement of Competition Law in Europe (The Common Core of European Private Law)." New York: Cambridge University Press…, 2007. First edition. English language. Hardcover with black cloth boards titled gilt on spine in glossy dust jacket. Nonfiction legal academic text in two parts with preface, introduction, outlook, bibliography, and indices. 9 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches. 46 oz. xxiv, 714 pp. Text clean. Like New to Fine in Fine jacket. ISBN: 9780521881104. "In the debate on the enforcement of competition law, many take the view that Europe should avoid the traps US law has fallen into by admitting excessive litigation. European law should not pave the way for judicial proceedings which ultimately serve the interests of lawyers or other agents rather than injured parties. This inquiry describes the state of remedies in competition law in fifteen European countries, analyses the underlying determinants, and proposes ways of improving the enforcement of competition law. The International and European legal frameworks are presented, as is the approach of US-American law. It is argued that efforts to strengthen private enforcement of antitrust law should benefit from the rich European experience in unfair competition law. The divergence between the two fields of law is not so huge that a completely different treatment is justified. Thus, a specifically European way of competition law enforcement could be developed.".
