Cloth. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. First University of California edition, second printing. "Men have always sought enjoyment, but how has a century of modernization affected the Japanese search? In an unusually vivid report, the author explores the changing rhythms and routines of Japanese…daily life. Taking the "after hours" as an epitome of the larger issue, he argues that the twentieth-century "leisure problem" in Japan as in the West arises not from a simple increase in free time so much as from a gap between traditional pathways of life-in-time and the demands of the modern milieu. His book presents a fresh view of Japan and at the same time offers fresh perspectives upon the human situation under industrial civilization. The author writes both as social scientist and as humanist. 'The After Hours' is an experiment in blending ethnographic reportage with a literate sense of graphic phrasing. Mr. Plath sketches the modernization of the Anchiku region of central Honshu Island, where he undertook field study in 1959 and 1960. He goes on to depict the dominant family styles of living in Anchiku today. Then in broader compass he examines Japanese values regarding work and leisure, Japanese temporal patterns, and uses of the after hours. The book concludes with a glimpse of the emerging Japanese image of after-hours man and its implications for the rest of the world." 222 pages. Price-clipped. Former owner's ink-stamped name on front endpaper. A NEAR FINE, CLEAN, TIGHT, SCHOLAR/COLLECTOR-WORTHY COPY! * Note: Additional shipping will be required for out-of-U.S. shipment! GH3.

Paperback. Condition: New. The durability of Japan's industrial products now holds world acclaim. But the durability of jobs in Japan-despite misleading Western images of lifetime employment-is no better than in other industrial nations. The "group model" of Japanese society that has been in fashion in the West confuses the goal…s of an organization with the personal aims and aspirations of its members. Like workers anywhere, those in Japan must go through life reconciling their duties to the job with their often conflicting obligations to family, to community, and to self-respect. Career outcomes are anything but certain in Japan-once we see them from a worker's point of view.Work and Lifecourse in Japan is a collection of workers' eye-level reports on career development in a variety of Japanese organizations and professions. In addition, there are overview chapters on employment trends in the Japanese economy, and on the problems of scheduling one's life-events in the demanding milieu of our post-industrial world.
