Exhibition Announcement Cards. This is not a book. Three original announcement cards for gallery exhibitions of work by David Rathman, all at the Clementine Gallery, NYC. These represent the artist's first three exhibitions in New York City: To Hell With Them Small Towns, Sept. 6 - Oct. 6, 2001; I Threw Away the Rose, Feb. 12 - March 13, 2004; and Somebody's Got to Go, Apr. 20 - May 20, 2006. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Small quarto. (10)ff. Throughout, Rathman's linocuts, gothic and mythic in their intensity, evoke the nervous, even violent edge of the text. The tale is inspired by and adapted from Amos Tutuola's The Palm-Wine Drinkard, the first African novel to be published in English outside of Africa. Tutuola based his original text on Yoruba folktales, and his style, epitomized by the novel, has become a considerable landmark in discussions regarding colonial (and decolonized) literature and language. Although Rathman's adaptation has smoothed over some of Tutuola's idiosyncrasies, his linocuts conjure similar feelings of mysticism and urgency which are indelible to folklore. Printed with aid from Gerald Lange of the Bieler Press and Norman Fritzberg of the Hansestadt Letterfoundry, and funded in part by the Minnesota Center for the Book Arts. Sheet held loose in four-flap portfolio with illustrated paper label to upper cover. Fine. One of thirty-five copies. Signed by the artist.

Edition limited to 30 copies, plus 7 artist's/printer's proofs, and 6 "unfolded deluxe copies" for a total edition of 43; this is printer's proof no. 3 (of 4) signed by David Rathman; oblong 4to; 9 double-page spreads, each approx. 14" x 34½", "hand-printed in lithography and silkscreen by Steve Andersen, Philip Barber, and Todd Norsten on BFK Rives paper," and contained in the original hinged wooden box with a branded title burned into the cover over acid stains, as issued; fine. This copy obtained directly from Rathman himself. Most of the edition was not boxed. Rathman tells me only "ten or so" boxes were ever made, and not more than a dozen of the edition were ever sold. What wasn't sold was lost in a bankruptcy case, and the sheets are now ostensibly resting in a warehouse in Milwaukee where they have been for nearly 30 years. OCLC locates 4 copies only: Minnesota Historical, Phoenix Public Library, University of Wisconsin at Madison, and the Getty, to which we add the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and Columbia.

Quarto (33.5cm); text is letterpress printed on Rives BFK, wire-bound into grey cloth-covered boards, with pictorial label inset on front cover; publisher's matching cloth slipcase; [26]pp; illustrated with 9 three-color engravings from relief prints and etchings by David Rathman. Fine in a Fine slipcase. An elaborate production, pairing the poetry of Russell Edson (1935-2014) with the artwork of Minneapolis-based visual artist David Rathman. Edson, a Guggenheim Fellow, has been called the "godfather of the prose poem in America." Uncommon, evidently sold out prior to publication; OCLC notes 8 holdings.

This is a remarkable collaboration between two of the Twin Cities' greatest book artists at work during the last quarter of the 20th century, and into the 21st: the printmaker David Rathman and the letterpress printer, Philip Gallo. The book was sold out immediately and even though these guys are my friends, this is the first time I've been able to offer a copy for sale in 25 years.
