Molte strofe di canzoni in spagnolo con MUSICA. Dorè convinse il barone Davillier "ispanista aristocratico" a un faticoso viaggio attraverso l intera penisola, nel 1862, negli ultimi momenti 'romantici', quando la ferrovia cominciava a soppiantare la diligenza; il testo descrive la "Spagna vera", non solo gli aspetti pittoreschi e folcloristici, (che però per fortuna trionfano nelle illustrazioni) troppo sfruttati dai loro predecessori.

The binding is robust with no foxing either to endpapers or any other pages. The beautifull, green, gilt-embossed boards have certain wear and fraying to head and foot of spine. There is also a little fraying to boards' edges with two small nicks to outer edge of back board. The spine is slightly sunned. There's a pale, oval stamp on each of the page blacks but no other indication that this is an ex-library copy. Photos available on request.

I Am Unsure When The "True First" Was Done But This First Thus By This Publisher Is An Extremely Scarce Copy Of This Famous Title Containing 236 Illustrations By The Incomparable Gustave Dore. 112 Full-Page And 124 Pages Smaller Illustrations. The Leather Covers Are Very Worn.Thru At Tips And All Spine Edges And Cracked Overall.The Black Pebble Cloth Is Soiled With Shelf Wear. The Binding Has Been Repaired.The Green Repair Cloth Visible At The Hinges Inside Each Cover. The Pages Have Toning To Edges But Few If Any Illustrations Are Affected.There Might Be A Couple But I Tried To Look At Every Page And Could Not Find Any That Were But I May Have Missed One Or Two Since There Are So Many Throughout This Huge 512 Pp Magical Creation. The Wonderful Drawings Are Inspiring And Spell-Binding To Look At. I Found Four Of The Full Page Have A Library Stamp.The Title Page Is Profusely Decorated With Library Stamps As Is The Last Page. There Are Probably Two Or Three Others Scattered Through The Rest Of The Book That I Missed. Overall Very Minimal Intrusion On The Important Part Of This Book.The Dore Illustrations. Again As I Looked Carefully Through The Book, I Could Not Find But One Tear To A Page With An Illustration. I May Have Missed One But I Don't Believe I Did. To Summarize.Very Few Problems On The Pages Other Than The Few Pages With Library Marks.A Little Toning To The Edges And Very Scarce Tears.Binding Is Slightly Cocked.Covers Intact But Nothing To Be Proud Of Other Than That This Is Rare For A Book Of This Size, 138 Years Of Age And Importance (Most Were Disbound For The Illustrations).The Title On The Spine Is Barely Legible But The White Library Number Is.I Have Given It A Price Based On It's Importance And Scarcity But Will Gladly Entertain Offers And Requests For Information And Pictures.

Henri Leblanc, Catalogue de l' uvre complet de Gustave Doré, Paris, 1931, pages 340-349).

Édition originale et premier tirage des 309 gravures dessinées sur bois par Gustave Doré in et hors texte.Cet ouvrage est une véritable ode à l?Espagne à la fois de l?auteur, le baron Charles Davillier qui était un infatigable voyageur et un grand connaisseur de ce pays, mais aussi de Gustave Doré qui décida de voyager à ses côté pour s?imprégner de l?ambiance en vu d?illustrer son Don Quichotte. L?auteur fait part de cette envie au début de son texte : «Depuis longtemps mon vieil ami Doré me parlait de son désir de voir l?Espagne [.] Mais, mon cher ami, lui répondais-je, tu oublies donc que, neuf fois déjà, si je sais bien compter, j?ai parcouru dans tous les sens la terre classique de la castagnette et du boléro?
