See her husband's entry in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 16mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with traces of mount on blank reverse of second leaf. Addressed to 'Dear Mr. Stirling' and signed 'Jane Davy'. She begins by asking him if he considers Jose Medina, the courier he had in Spain, 'intelligent, active, & willing'. She adds: 'I should now & then like my own way; will he allow me such an indulgence?' She also wants to know if Medina is 'fairly honest', by which she means 'that he will not allow others to cheat me. He asks me if my project for Spain is realized, Ten Pounds per month, & travelling expenses in Spain, when I have my own little Establishment, his food is to be in my Kitchen ones.' She will be grateful for any information, and appeals to his charity, 'as it would be a good deed to assist an old Lady Traveller. My projects are more uncertain than my inclinations, for I really pine to see Seville & other Cities in the Spain all Travellers love.' She will be there 'some weeks', but 'as early an answer as may be convenient' to him would be valuable. Docketed at foot of final page in a Victorian hand 'Wife of Sir Humphry Davy'. See Wikipedia entry: " was a rich widow who had travelled in Europe and she moved to Edinburgh where she established herself at the centre of Scottish literary society.[2] It was said that she had inspired the character of Corinne who was the protagonist in Anne Louise Germaine de Staël's 1807 novel. She had met Germaine de Staël but that influence is more reliably assigned to Diodata Saluzzo Roero.[3]She turned down a proposal to become the wife of the elder Professor John Playfair and instead accepted the proposal of the celebrity scientist Sir Humphry Davy.[2] The new couple travelled to Paris, Florence and then Rome accompanied by Michael Faraday. During the trip Davy received a medal from Napoleon and Davy and Faraday proved that diamonds were flammable. They returned to England when Napoleon escaped from Elba. They continued to travel in Europe, but increasingly they travelled separately as they had a difficult relationship. Nevertheless, Lady Davy travelled to Rome when she heard that her husband had been taken ill there, and she accompanied him to Geneva where he died in 1829.".

French translation by Jean Baptiste van Mons (1765 - 1842) of Davy's '' Elements of Chemical Philosophy'' which appeared in one part only in 1812. Van Mons became at the restart in 1797 one of the editors of the '' Annales de Chimie'' together with Fourcroy , de Pelletier , de Vauquelin, Prieur a.o. In 1801 he started in Brussels a similar publication called ''Journal de Chimie et de Physique''. During the period 1780 - 1820, revolutionary advances were made in chemistry. He was at the forefront in collecting data to expand chemical knowledge and was in contact with most of the important European scientists; Brugnatelli, Buchholtz, Traumdorff , Oersted., also with Volta of whom he published the invention of the battery 2 years before the Royal Society of London. The original text of Davy is nearly doubled here with the commentaries of Van Mons. Volume II contains as introduction a very readable history of chemistry (56 pp) signed A.D.T. Rare, not in KUL library (where Van Mons was a professor).
framed. Condition: very good. Signature of British chemist and inventor Humphry Davy. Framed with an etched image of Davy. Circa 1803. Please inquire for more information. Sir Humphry Davy, 1st Baronet was a British chemist and inventor who invented the Davy lamp and a very early form of arc lamp. He is also remembered for isolating, by using electricity, several elements for the first time: potassium and sodium in 1807 and calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium and boron the following year, as well as for discovering the elemental nature of chlorine and iodine. Davy also studied the forces involved in these separations, inventing the new field of electrochemistry. Davy is also credited with discovering clathrate hydrates.

Condition: Very Good. FOUR AUTOGRAPH LETTERS with good content by Humphry Davy to his close friend and patron Davies Gilbert. In one letter, written on the recto of one sheet with Gilbert's address on verso, Davy mentions a recent visit to William Herschel (". I have been very much delighted to see the activity & zeal with which Mr Herschell pursues Astronomy & the perfect state of his instruments."); in another letter (one sheet, both sides), Davy writes emotionally to Gilbert about his health and the Presidency of the Royal Society: ".I am very anxious to learn the state of your feelings with respect to the Presidency, if what I fear must be the case the state of my health obliges me to resign.". Gilbert would indeed succeed Davy as President of the Royal Society in 1827 after Davy resigned due to illness. In the third letter (one sheet, both sides), Davy writes to Davy while convalescing with Coleridge's friend Tom Poole (".Mr Poole my kind Host desires to be respectfully remembered to the Pres. RS."). In the final letter (half sheet, one side) Davy addresses a simple business matter. Each letter is signed "H. Davy". 1805-27. Folds and a few spots of early tape reinforcement. Remnants of wax seal on letter mentioning Herschel. Generally very good. Note: A custom cloth box is available for $250.
