Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. Fold-out map. A facsimile of the edition published by Cassell and Company, London, 1916. "When Inspector Burton Deane left for Regina in 1883 to join the staff of the headquarters of the Royal North-West Mounted Police, he was told in Ottawa that he would find the Mounties an 'armed mob'. He was not disappointed. The ten-year-old force did not have one standing order or regulation, and it was his responsibility to compose regulations for the force, and to establish Mounted Police law. As adjutant to the commissioner and supervisor of the Regina post, he was responsible for establishing all administrative procedure, and he was always at the nerve-centre of every major development on the Prairies in those years. He administered the white man's dealings with the Indians, and in 1885 the captured Riel was put in his custody. His intimate contact with his prisoner makes fascinating reading. But shortly afterward, conflict with the controversial and difficult new commissioner, Lawrence Herchmer, led to his transfer to Lethbridge, where he was Supervisor for 'fourteen happy years'. His ardent persecution of cattle and horse thieves and smugglers led him to arrest a good friend of a Dominion Cabinet minister, winning him a transfer to the remote and tiny outpost of Maple Creek. There he patrolled a large section of the Canadian Pacific Railway, until friendlier forces in government assigned him to command of the post at Calgary." Faint line indentation across spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, knife cut across spine - archivally taped on inside, very small tear at bottom of rear flap-fold - archivally taped. Not Signed.

After a military career in the British Army, (Royal Marines) the author was appointed an Inspector in the North-West Mounted Police on July 1, 1883, promoted to Superintendent the following year. During the turbulent events of the North-West Rebellion in 1885, the author was in command of the Headquarters Division at Regina. There he was responsible for Louis Riel, the Metis leader, during his imprisonment, trial and execution. As Adjutant, the author compiled the first published 'Regulations and Orders' of the Force in 1889. He later spent many years in command of the divisions at Calgary and Lethbridge. Although an able and efficient officer, the author's tactless and outspoken manner did not always endear him to his Superiors.
