The book opens with an overview of the existing literature on absorption by mercury vapor and previous investigations into the emission spectrum of the mercury arc in the infra-red region. The author notes discrepancies and gaps in existing research and identifies the need for further investigation of lines observed by Coblentz and Geer in the neighborhood of 311μμ.
