First edition hard back binding in publisher's original scarlet buckram covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt back, front end paper map. 8vo. 8¾'' x 5¾''. First volume by Her Majesty's Stationery Office in 'The Corona Library' series of books about the British Colonial territories. Contains (xii), 307 + i pp with 40 black and white and colour plates on loaded paper, 6 text drawings, and 7 maps. Rear pocket holds very large folded map of Hong Kong and the New Territories (40'' x 28¾'' (G. S. G. S. 3961, 3rd edition, North Sheet, Grid Correction 1946, printed 1949) and a large folded colour map of New Territories and of Victoria & Kowloon Street Plan and Densities of Population (25¼'' x 18½''), spare gatherings made by the binder to allow to the book to close neatly with the maps in situ. Roosevelt To South America And The Inter-American Conference For The Maintenance Of Peace, Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 18 November 1936 until 15 December 1936. (illustrator). First Edition. Octavo, x, 63pp, [1], [map]. Blue cloth, naval device in gilt on front cover. Frontispiece portrait of the U.S.S. Indianapolis. Lacking scarce glassine dust jacket, which features a spider web design. (Halter, 191) Includes fold-out map of South America. Provenance: From the estate of Roosevelt Secret Service Agent Paul M. Hart, who accompanied Roosevelt on the cruise to South America. While these were printed by the Government Printing Office, all expenses were covered by the Roosevelt family. None were offered for public sale. This copy is one of three known examples, including a signed copy from the Paul Hart collection and a copy in the Library of Congress. The "Good Neighbor" mission to South America set sail on November 18, 1936 from Charleston aboard the U.S.S. Indianapolis (CA-35). The cruise took Roosevelt to Trinidad, Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. During the visit, he attended the Pan-American Conference in Buenos Aires and returned to the United States on December 15, 1936. The USS Indianapolis served with distinction during World War II, delivering the first nuclear weapon, "Little Boy," to the Tinian Naval Base. Only days later, the Indianapolis would be sunk by Japanese torpedoes, resulting in the greatest loss of life in United States naval history.
