Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Engraved frontispiece, [50], 331p, [29]. 19th century cloth over marbled boards. SIGNED DEDICATION BY THE EDITOR CHRISTOPHER CELLARIUS TO THE GERMAN LAWYER FRIEDRICH BENEDICT CARPZOV (1649-1699) DATED HALLE OCTOBER 1697. While the engraved frontispiece is dated 1698, the title page is dated 1697. However, since Cellarius has dated his dedication 1697, it must be assumed that this was the official publication date which differs from the various bibliographers who places the publication date a year later. There are also numerous contemporary annotations in the last index, as well as some in the text. Moss p496 refers to it as a very respectable edition and greatly superior to every preceding one in point of correctness and purity. Schweiger I. p346. 19th century roan over paper covered boards. Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. [8], 9p, [8] Original stiff wrappers from handmade fine paper. With a signed dedication to Judge Walter B. Beals on the inside front paper by President Calvin Coolidge, (1872-1933) 30th President of the United States. An additional signature by President Coolidge on the last text leaf. This speech was held at the Washington Auditorium in DC and it was a tribute to the many who served and sacrificed for their country in a time of war. The speech also addressed the tremendous cost of the war and people. University of Washington Library where Judge Beals collection and papers are kept, writes as follows: "Walter Burges Beals (1876-1960) had a distinguished career as an attorney, army officer, and judge, but he also become one of the most prominent private collectors of manuscripts and rare books in the Pacific Northwest. He practiced law in Seattle, served in the military during the First World War, and worked as a King County judge, a Washington State Supreme Court judge, and Chief Justice of the Court. Judge Beals was the Presiding Judge at the International Military Tribunal I held in Nuremberg from 1946-1947, at which Nazi doctors were tried. He retired in 1951". Nicely bound with handmade paper. Small tear at the inner margin of one blank leaf. Old handwritten label attached to the inside rear cover. Two small foxing spots on the front wrapper to the speech, otherwise internally clean. Add to basketDecorative Cloth. Condition: Very Good ++. 1st Edition. 1st Edition 1967. The dedication copy. Presentation inscription and postcard from his friend the author to Edgell Rickword. From the library of John Edgell Rickword, his wife Beatrix and finally by decent to their daughter Dr Jane Grubb. Small bookplate detailing the provenance attached to each volume. Most of the his books went to institutions after his death so this book is rare thus. John Edgell Rickword, MC 1898-1982 was an English poet, critic, journalist and literary editor. He became one of the leading communist intellectuals active in the 1930s. After joining the army he saw front-line action in France as a subaltern in the Royal Berkshire Regiment. He was wounded twice?losing the sight of one eye?and he won the Military Cross for distinguished service. After the armistice Rickword was invalided out of the army. The following year he went up to Pembroke College, Oxford, to read French literature. His first collection of verse, Behind the Eyes (1921), contains similar styles poetry to be found in Sassoon's war verse. Additionally, these poems, including the much-anthologized "Trench Poets," "Winter Warfare," and "The Soldier addresses his Body," were part of Rickword's already distinctive style. In the 1930's he took up literary work in London. He reviewed for the Times Literary Supplement, which led to his celebrated review of T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land. He joined the Communist Party of Great Britain in 1934, and became increasingly active in political work during the period of the Spanish Civil War; while still writing poetry. During the second world war years Rickword wrote some superb social and literary criticism, including studies of the war poets of World War I, John Milton, and English radical thinkers of the 19th century. By the end of the war he become editor of Our Time, a literary review that tried to create bridges between the arts and common people. After this he became Editor of Our Time, the Communist review, from 1944 to 1947, working with David Holbrook. Rickword had an upbeat view at the time on the possibilities of popular culture and radical politics, and the circulation rose as he broadened the publication's scope from popular political poetry. Rickword's eyesight failed completely in his last years, though he was working on his memoirs up to his death. He died on March 15, 1982. Rickword's actual contribution to the development of English poetry is undervalued even now, in spite of the fact that several selections from and collections of his poems have appeared at regular intervals since the end of World War II.The reputation of Rickword as a poet has been overshadowed to some extent by his better-known achievements as critic and editor. And yet Rickword the poet?as much as Rickword the brilliant literary and social critic or Rickword the outstanding editor?has been one of the models of creative intelligence in British culture since the end of World War I. Rickword's work stands foursquare in English tradition, but it is in that tradition revolutionized by the same shaping forces of modernism that transformed Eliot's poetry. Rickword, with an intelligence and sensibility fully responsive to both French poetry and to English, opened up new paths for English poetry during the decade after World War I. According to Rickword, "to himself the poet should be in the first place a man, not an author." He certainly followed his own advice. As David Holbrook wrote (about Rickword's most caustic poetry of the late 1920s): "It strikes home, because underlying it is the tragic acceptance of man's situation, and the governed urbanity, civilisation and joy of a sensitive, responsible poet." The bulk of Edgells's archive resides at Manchester University library but the main part of the collection which was deposited by his friend David Holbrook is at Downing College Cambridge Archive. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Splendidly bound in bright black finely woven cloth stamped brightly in silver and red on the front boards and on the spine. Very clean and tight. In a striking dust jacket designed with prison bar motifs by Samuel Schaeffer. With the original price of $3.00 at the bottom of the inside front flap; and with light chipping and some small pieces missing at the top and bottom of the spine ends. Note: This copy has two dedication pages, one laid in and signed by "Lewis Lawes" in purple ink and underscored. The printed dedication reads: "To those tens of thousands of my former wards who have justified my faith in human nature." The signed dedication page fits seamlessly over the original dedication page, but has not been glued in. A very handsome collectible copy and rather scarce with Warden Lewis Lawes' signature. Lawes was Warden of Sing Sing from 1920-1941. This book was the basis for Warner Brothers movie staring Spencer Tracy and Bette Davis and directed by Michael Curtiz. During the early sound era, the subject of prison reform was rarely addressed in Hollywood movies until the release of I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang (1932) which generated a storm of controversy and sparked public interest. After that, the topic became a subgenre of the crime melodramas so popular at the time and, not surprisingly, most of the best entries were from Warner Bros. who specialized in contemporary films with urban settings, often based on true events. This was particularly true of 20,000 Years in Sing Sing (1932) which was based on the memoirs of Lewis E. Lawes, the former warden of Sing Sing. Lawes began his career as a nineteen-year-old prison guard and rose through the ranks to his eventual appointment as governor of Sing Sing. Like his predecessor, Thomas M. Osborne, Lawes was committed to educating the press and the public about the harsh realities of prison life and programs that could successfully rehabilitate prisoners. Many of his experiences would serve as source material for other popular prison dramas such as Over the Wall (1938), You Can't Get Away with Murder (1939), and Invisible Stripes (1939). Because the studio so valued Lawes's involvement in 20,000 Years in Sing Sing he was given final approval of the script and the finished film. In exchange, Lawes arranged for director Michael Curtiz and his cast and crew to have access to Sing Sing where several scenes were shot using actual prisoners - a rare instance of on-location filming for a major studio during that era. (TCM) First Edition with matching dates of 1932 on the title and copyright pages.
