Cajal investigó la microanatomía de casi todo el sistema nervioso y formuló teorías sobre su función, desarrollo y plasticidad, que influyeron profundamente en la ciencia de su época y sentaron las bases de la neurociencia actual. Entre sus mayores logros destaca su defensa de la teoría neuronal, que establece que las neuronas son unidades individuales, frente a la teoría reticular que proponía una red continua. Su obra cumbre sobre este debate, ¿Neuronismo o reticularismo?, fue publicada en 1933 en la revista Archivos de Neurobiología. El texto de la reedición se mantiene fiel al original, conservando sus notas explicativas y citas bibliográficas intactas. Desde el punto de vista lingüístico, el texto sigue siendo perfectamente comprensible, aunque algunos términos científicos en desuso han sido revisados y reemplazados por sus equivalentes actuales. La edición también incluye un capítulo introductorio que amplía los aspectos históricos del debate, una sección sobre la confirmación ultraestructural de la teoría neuronal mediante microscopía electrónica y un análisis de hallazgos recientes que desafían algunos aspectos de esta teoría.
