Paperback. Condition: New. 1st. Born in Newgate Prison to an incarcerated mother, Moll Flanders is compelled from earliest childhood to make her own way in the world and to live off her wit and beauty. Her desire to climb the rungs of society leads her through a tangled web of incest, adultery, prostitution, deception and theft, before she is eventually transported to the New World for her crimes.Presented as Moll's autobiography, and published anonymously, the novel, through its self-made protagonist, highlights the intricacies and double standards of Moll's contemporary society, and offers an irresistible and evocative insight into both the drawing rooms and seedy back alleys of seventeenth-century England.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Born in Newgate prison and abandoned six months later, Moll's drive to find and hold on to a secure place in society propels her through incest, adultery, bigamy, prostitution and a resourceful career as a thief ('the greatest Artist of my time') before she is apprehended and returned to Newgate. If Moll Flanders is on one level a Puritan's tale of sin and repentance, through self-made, self-reliant Moll its rich subtext conveys all the paradoxes and amoralities of the struggle for property and power in Defoe's newly individualistic society. Born in Newgate prison and abandoned six months later, Moll Flanders' drive to find and hold on to a secure place in society propels her through incest, adultery, bigamy, prostitution and a resourceful career as a thief before her crimes catch up with her, and she is transported to the colony of Virginia. First edition of a Barnes & Noble compilation of five novels by Daniel Defoe, a literary giant who may be best known for Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders. Barnes & Noble says the book is part of its Library of Essential Writers. Robinson Crusoe was first published in 1719 and has endured as one of the great adventure stories in western literature. Only flaw I detected is some discoloration on the inside rear flap of the jacket. It's not that dramatic.
