Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Edition; stated First Printing. Very Good+ tight and free of unwanted marks or past names. No dogeared corners, creases, or tears. Fabulous artwork by Paul Sagsoorian. Meindert De Jong, a Dutch-born American, Newbery Medal-winning writer of children's books. During t…he height of his popularity, he frequently collaborated with Maurice Sendak, who illustrated seven of De Jong's books i.e., The House of Sixty Fathers. "Young Mark is alone on his family farm when the tornado strikes. He's not really alone, because his elderly grey horse Colonel - who shows him birds' nests and other nature - is around; but Colonel has run off in front of the tornado. A young brown mare has also run in front of the deadly funnel and Mark finds her standing injured in the creek, once the wind passes. He names her Creek and tries to look after her. The elderly couple on the neighbouring farm also need his help. Mr Sayers is just creaky but his wife is injured and she has splinters of wood and glass all over her body. Mark and the old man have to rig up a sledge and get her to help; the phone lines are down and the roads are cluttered with debris. Colonel and even the injured Creek have to work together with Mark to save the elderly lady. This is a great adventure as it shows young people how to stand up and help others. Best for horse-lovers but any young person should enjoy this tale and learn from it, especially if they are Scouts or Guides. DeJong also wrote Along came a Dog, The Wheel on the School and The House of Sixty Fathers. This is my favourite of his works." review by Clare O'Beara. Paul Sagsoorian (illustrator).
