Jean-Claude Delamétherie (ou de La Métherie ou de Lamétherie) est un naturaliste, un minéralogiste, un géologue et un paléontologue français, né le 4 septembre 1743 à La Clayette (Saône-et-Loire) et mort le 1 juillet 1817 à Paris. En 1811 seront publiées ses Leçons de minérologies données au Collège de France. Dans la préface de cette publication, il cite les deux premiers volumes de sa Théorie de la terre comme l'un des ouvrages de référence sur ce sujet.

L'ouvrage, paru pour la première fois en 1795, est ici considérablement enrichi pour les parties consacrées à la minéralogie. Les planches gravées sur cuivre présentent des modèles cristallographiques, des coupes de terrain et les mouvements de la terre. L'auteur expose ici ses hypothèses neptuniennes radicales, tirées de la théorie de Werner : toutes choses, y compris les organismes vivants, les océans et les montagnes, se sont initialement cristallisées à partir d'un milieu liquide. Ainsi, l'auteur refuse de reconnaître le rôle de l'érosion dans la formation de la Terre, en faisant de la cristallisation le principe de reproduction universelle : seuls les mouvements de l'eau et de la planète seraient responsables des grandes transformations. Ces théories valurent à Delamétherie une grande influence parmi ses contemporains; à l'inverse, elles ont nui à sa postérité. Paradoxalement, il fut novateur dans ses idées sur l'évolution, car il supposait que l'homme était une sorte de singe perfectionné par l'état social. Delamétherie abandonna la carrière médicale pour se tourner vers les sciences. Il fréquenta Diderot et d'Alembert et se suppléa à Cuvier dans l'enseignement de la minéralogie et de la géologie au Collège de France. De 1785 à sa mort, il dirigea l'important Journal de physique.
