Print on Demand Edition 2011. (ii), 12, 376 pp., frontis DeLeon, an accomplished author, wrote this book almost immediately after the war, revising and condensing notes and recollections gathered during its most trying times. The book is unique in that DeLeon experienced many events that other writers of the times largely glossed over. As a civilian, he wrote of the politics of the Confederacy and described many of the tensions within the government. He omits the campaigns and battles which he did not see and which have been the subject of so many writings. Instead he had the object of trying to paint honestly the inner life of the South and what was going on in its cities and towns as the war waged on. Geographically, it covers the war throughout the South but with the largest emphasis on happenings in Alabama and Virginia.

Presumed first edition. Paged as i-xx, 9-464 pages. Hardcover: H 21.75cm x L 14.75cm. No dust jacket present. Maroon cloth rubbed; spine and front board's gilt stamping remains bright; small cloth loss and tearing at spine head with slight scuffing at heel; some bumping/scuffing to board corners. Dark top edge; toning to fore-edge and bottom edge. Three-line ink ownership inscription for Asheville, North Carolina resident dated June 1909 on front free endpaper with some associated smudging onto front pastedown; Mobile, Alabama bookseller ticket for Wm. E. Mickle [William E. Mickle] affixed at front pastedown's top left and causes strong transfer toning to ffep's top right; occasional light soiling to interior leaves. Weight of book's high quality paper contributes to usual stress points at text block's quires but overall binding remains firm. Still a handsome very good copy. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which further enhances the book's shelf presence. The title page verso cites 1907 and 1909 copyrights but the earlier date seems to relate to material that may have appeared among de Leon's prolific newspaper writing. After Confederate Army service, Thomas de Leon served as editor of several Mobile, Alabama newspapers including The Mobile Register, The Gossip, and The Gulf Citizen as well as the manager of the Mobile Mardi Gras Carnival. de Leon authored several books including OUR CREOLE CARNIVALS; THEIR ORIGIN, HISTORY, PROGRESS AND RESULTS (1890) and his popular FOUR YEARS IN REBEL CAPITALS (1893). Bibliographical references: Howes U.S.IANA #D-240; Nevins II, page 187; In Tall Cotton #40. Please note that this thick book has an approximate shipping weight of 3.5 pounds (1.58 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
