n.d. [circa 1920-1930s?] Gelatin silver photograph 7 1/4 x 9 1/4?, mounted and framed, signed in pencil on the mat by the photographer. ? Portrait of an older couple smiling under the shade of a nearby tree, signed by Consuela Kanaga to the mat in the lower right, she began signing her name Consuelo sometime after the 1930s. Consuelo Kanaga (1894-1978) was an American photographer and civil rights advocate. She launched her photography career after learning dark room techniques as a staff photographer at the San Francisco Chronicle. She met Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston, and Dorothea Lange through the California Camera Club. While not an official member of the f/64 group, her images were exhibited for the first time at San Francisco's M. H. de Young Memorial Museum in 1932. As can be seen in this photo, Kanaga distinguished her portraits from the documentary images of the Farm Security Administration by conveying her subject's physical comfort and personal pride.
