Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. To Save A River: Documenting the Natural History, Restoration and Preservation of the Ducktrap River; photographs by Dennis C. Shultz; narrative by Scott Dickerson; A Coastal Mountains Land Trust Book; Aperture Fountain, New York, 2002. First edition. From the blurb This book tells the inspiring story, in words and matchless photographs, of the ongoing effort to restore and preserve one of the last salmon rivers in the eastern United States. Once, not too long ago, New England rivers ran silver in late summer and early fall, flashing with hundreds of thousands of wild Atlantic salmon returning from the sea to spawn in their clean, free-flowing home waters. Now, sadly, this stirring sight is no more. Their numbers drastically reduced by the depredations of man, wild Atlantic salmon the king of sports fish, and once a valued economic resource are to be found in the United States in no more than eight rivers and in small numbers at that. Maine s little-known Ducktrap River is one of these rare salmon rivers. In 1995, a group of what now numbers 26 diverse organizations, including conservation groups, state and federal agencies, local governments and citizens groups, began working cooperatively with landowners to restore and protect the natural and scenic attributes of the Ducktrap watershed, including the salmon. In seven brief years the Ducktrap Coalition has achieved astonishing results. Fully 81% of the land abutting the river has been permanently conserved through conservation easements and outright purchase. In a rich and deeply fascinating text, the author explains why efforts to bring back the salmon will yield benefits far beyond simply preserving a single species. In scores of beautifully-printed platinum images, photographer Schultz presents the Ducktrap in all its pristine glory its ponds and waterfalls, its stands of majestic conifers and misty wetlands This folio sized book, 128 pages measuring 339mm X 295mm, is in fine condition in a near-fine dust jacket that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. This large book will require additional postage.
