"Dans le domain…e de l`ameublement, part belle est faite aux créatrices: Paule Marrot, Primerose Bordier, Lizzie Derriey sont autant de personnalités et d`autres femmes vont marquer le monde de la décoration et de la création textile. Im Rahmen einer Ausstellung von Entwürfen aus dem Atelier Derriey, die 2011 im Luxus-Kaufhaus Liberty in London stattfand, wurde eine ehemalige Mitarbeiterin des Ateliers interviewt und sie erklärte, wie die Entwürfe entstanden und wie sie verkauft wurden: "The creation of the design was all done by hand using basic materials - paper, gouache, sable brushes. Before designers began exhibiting at large design fairs like Indigo and Surtex, and the designer halls at Heimtex, most designs were sold from the showrooms of the design studios. Therefore the buyers and clients would generally visit all these studios by appointment. They would have special design buying trips planned in their schedule at various times of the year, pounding the streets of Paris, Como, etc. Studios would also send out their Sales people to also pound the streets with their weighty portfolios and sometimes hope to sell a design or collection. In the old days the studio had very strict rules regarding the exposure of designers to clients. The European studios, especially the French ones, were quite obsessed about this. Type and ornament designer and typefounder Charl…es Derriey (1808-1877) issued this elaborate trade catalogue to coincide with the International Exhibition in London. The work is composed of the following sections: vignetes, ornate letters, pen flourishes, swashed and shaded cartouches, filets, rulings, music types, and finally the Specimen-Album itself: examples of trade cards, bill and letterheads, certificates, etc., all printed using the decorative materials and motifs in the preceeding samples. "One of the most beautiful works ever issued from the French, or, indeed any other press" (Bigmore & Wyman, Bibliography of Printing, p. 163). "This is one of the most colorful and elaborate type specimen books of all time. The precision of casting and fitting together of the ornaments when combined with incredible press work and register of the colors, silver and gold is truly impressive" (Burke, Typographia 520).
